Route 1 (10km):
In Viking land (Edøy-Straumen):
From the moment you set ashore in Edøy, the traffic crossing point of Smøla, you will feel that you have touched historical ground. The old stone church from about year 1200 proves the presence of people from very far back.
The islands you will cross before you come to mainland Smøla are linked by a number of bridges. The entire area provides numerous spots if you want to go fishing from one of the bridges, have a stroll in an archaeological area from Viking times, or stop to go canoeing or kayaking in one of the streams nearby.
The island called Kuli hosts a big archaeological spot. The first human residence registered here is from approximately 1850 b. Christ. At the Kuli farm there is a copy of the well-known Kuli rune stone. This rune stone is the first verified proof of Christianity in Norway, with the inscription in rune letters: “Tore and Hallvard rose this stone after Ulv.... twelve years had Christianity been in Norway.”
By leaving the main road you can visit the village of Rosvoll. Here the local authorities and associations have made visiting the old rectory comfortable by installing picnic facilities and constructing a marina for small boats. From here there's only a short walk to the Rosvoll hill, one of the view points over the Smøla coastline.

Route 2 (25km)
Over the moors:
You cycle from Straumen along the national road 669 to Nelvika, where you turn left up the county road to Frostadheia. This is the agricultural area of the borough with handsome farms all along the road. Smøla is one of the biggest producers of swedes and carrots harvested in September/October. This stretch offers numerous good lakes for fishing. The sea trout ascends the streams, and bites generously regardless the kind of bait you use. The Smøla moors are also well suited for hiking, and at certain times of the year the hunting season offers game like deer, hare and goose.
From about 1930 up to our times, thrifty settlers have laid the foundation of modern farming. The history of bog farming is represented at the Bog Museum, situated at the closed "attempt" farm run by the state of Norway until the middle of the nineties. Over the last moor before you arrive at Sætran, the open sea appears with nearby islands Hitra and Frøya in the horizon. In Sætran you can book a deep-sea fishing trip on a staffed fishing boat, or you can rent your own smaller boat. At the end of the route lies the community centre of Hopen with a modern shopping mall and a town-hall. The "Hopenvassdraget"- one of the best spots for inland fishing - is also in the same area.

Route 3 (10km++)
With wind in the sails (Hopen - Smøla wind farm)
From the Hopen community centre you can go 5 km south along the national road 669 to Smøla wind farm, which is Norway's largest wind power plant. The plant was opened by King Harald in September 2002. Along the road you will probably meet your first sea eagle very quickly, due to the fact that this is where they have their nests. Smøla is to be counted among the most interesting bird areas in Norway. Not only sea eagles, but also a number of other rare species can be observed on the island.
The habitants of Smøla have always worked with the forces of nature. In the past as well as now, we have used wind for all possible purposes. The wind farm on Smøla has taken us into modern times, and it is already a local and national display of future thinking and environment friendly power production.
Between the mills the construction of numerous roads make the area excellent for cycling. Along the roads and out on the moors there are a lot of freshwater ponds perfect for a fresh swim or some serious fishing. You can choose your route freely in the wind farm - both the wind and the power company Statkraft wish you welcome!
On this route there are no service facilities, but if you take the national road a few kilometres further south, you will find a village called Dyrnes with a boarding house, a country shop and a nine hole golf course available.
Route 4 (11km)
The coastline road (Hopen-Veiholmen)
From the community centre of Hopen you can cycle to the fishing village called Veiholmen, so far west in the sea you can possibly come. The road out there was opened in 1977, and up to that time Veiholmen was an isolated community of 500 habitants which mainly made its living from fishing. Today you will meet a modern fishing village where tourists have discovered several of the old sea houses. The road to Veiholmen crosses many islets and rocks all the way to the old "Været".
It is an experience in itself just to be in this particular environment. However, if you should wish to visit Veiholmen more thoroughly, you have several options. You might want to join a local and go deep-sea fishing on a staffed boat, or visit the costal culture collection of "Brenneriet", or perhaps the Sanden museum in an old captain's house from the 17th century. You can also rent a smaller boat and glide between well polished skerries and islets, or bring your diving equipment in order to explore the exciting under-surface life. As far out as you can come lies the Hauggjela lighthouse, today equipped to host tourists. On Veiholmen you can find several possibilities of accommodation in a special environment.
Right in the middle of "Været" there is a monument representing the "Fisherman's Wife" - the story of a life of grind and worries, care and consideration - a life where the close environment is in the centre. If you have a look around, you will most certainly meet her, in her daily work...
