The Coastal Route
Attractions and other activities
There are many attractions and other things to do along the Coastal Route. Lots of bathing opportunities. Here’s a list of "goodies".
Horten and Borre:
Preus fotomuseum, T: +47 33031630. Photo museum with collections from Norwegian and international photography.
Midgard-historisk senter, T: +47 33071850. www.vestfold.com/midgard. At Midgard Historical Centre you will find information on the cultural remains and historical monuments in Vestfold.
Marinemuseet (naval museum), T: +47 33 03 33 97, featuring an exciting exhibition depicting the Royal Norwegian Navy’s contribution to Norwegian history. It is situated in Karljohansvern – an historical naval garrison town – well worth a visit.
Borrehaugene, (Borre burial mounds) these burial mounds comprise the very first national park in Norway featuring North Europe’s most extensive collection of graves of Kings of the House of Ynglinge.
Åsgårdstrand – an idyllic coastal town, do pay a visit to the home of Edvard Munch.
Tønsberg:
Tønsberg is the oldest town in Norway and Slottsfjellet is its historical pride and joy.
Haugar Vestfold Kunstmuseum (art museum), T: +47 33 30 76 70, www.haugar.com boasting a permanent exhibition of Odd Nedrums paintings.
Vestfold Fylkesmuseum, T: +47 33 30 76 70, brings to life the history of Vestfold with permanent and visiting exhibitions.
Tønsberg Brygge bustles with life during the summer months and is a favourite meeting place for people of all ages
Oseberghaugen , this burial ground was excavated in 1904 to reveal the most extensive and valuable collection of relics from the Viking era. The Oseberg Ship (now in Oslo) was found here.
Sandefjord:
Gokstadhaugen, the Gokstad Ship, a very important relic, was found here in 1880.
Hvalfangstmuseum (whaling museum), T: +47 33 48 46 50, the only museum in Europe dedicated to whaling.
Museumsbrygga, exhibiting an authentic whaling vessel, the Gaia Ship, and a copy of the Gokstad Ship (the original is in Oslo)
Larvik:
Tollerodden, monuments of Thor Heyerdahl and Colin Archer in a beautiful park museum.
Herregården, T: +47 33 12 04 04 was the official residence of the Danish Head of State, Count Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve from 1677. This is the most impressive and splendid baroque building in Norwegian wooden architecture. Several exhibitions
Bøkeskogen. The world`s nothernmost beechwood and the largest public beechwood in Norway. Nice recreational area.

Stavern and Helgeroa:
Stavern an idyllic township steeped in artistic culture.
Eventyrhuset, (fairytale house), T: +47 33 19 81 99 lose yourself in one of the good old fairytales about Askeladden and the Princess.
Fredriksværn Verft , this garrison, set in the beautiful Brunlanes countryside, is worth a visit before you continue your ride to Helgeroa. The garrison features buildings from the 18th C.
Langesund:
Cudrios Sjøbod, is housed in wooden cogged building from the 18th C, down by the harbour. Exhibitions on three levels of Langesunds maritime history, gallery.
Kragerø:
Berg-Kragerø Museum, is one of Kragerø’s finest attractions with a splendid historical open-air museum at Berg, just outside the town. Here buildings from the 19th C blend with more modern museum buildings. Large park with sandy beach, walks and much more. For further information, T: +47 35 98 14 53.
Theodor Kittelsen’s childhood home, now a museum is in Kragerø where he was born in 1857.
Galleri Compagniet art gallery. Situated in the town centre – sales exhibitions.
Gunnarholmen Kystfort (coastal fort) is in the middle of the town. Ruins of a fort built in the 17th C. Popular bathing resort.
Jomfruland:
Jomfruland lighthouse built 1869 is presently home to many exhibitions. For opening hours etc: T: +47 36 98 23 88.
Risør:
Risør Akvarium, Dampskipsbrygga, T: +47 37 15 32 82 the only salt water aquarium on the south coast.
Stangholmen Lighthouse, built in 1855, is now a summer restaurant, kiosk and bar, where the fjord meets the sea. Just a short boat trip from Risør.
Risørflekken, viewpoint in Urheia just outside Risør. Fantastic view of the town.
Lyngør:
An island just a short boat trip from Gjeving. In 1991 Lyngør was voted Europe’s most well preserved township. Restaurants, museums, overnight accommodation and shopping as well as tempting bathing opportunities. Taxi-boat services in addition to local ferries all year.

Tvedestrand:
Tvedestrand Museum, Manor and seat of administration, close to the harbour. Summer town museum, for opening hours call +47 37 16 11 01.
Strykejernet in the presinct, is Norway’s narrowest and most peculiar wooden building with ground floor entrances from the outside to all three stories.
Tjenna, idyllic beach in the middle of this charming little town.
Arendal:
Kløkers Hus (town museum), Nedre Tyholmsvei 14, T: +47 37 02 59 25. Situated on Tyholmen, in the oldest and best preserved part of Arendal.
Merdø and museum, an island off Arendal, take the boat from Pollen and discover the most historical outport on the Skagerak coast. For further information T: +47 37 08 52 43
Kalvesund festning, a huge garrison fort built by the Germans during World War II. Situated in the Flosta/Kilesund area. Bathing. Further information T: +47 37 00 55 44
Grimstad:
Grimstad Sjøfartsmuseum (maritime museum) in Hasseldalen with relics from the days of sail displaying, amongst other things, maritime gear and maritime paintings, T: +47 37 04 40 41.
Ibsenhuset and Grimstad town museum, H. Ibsensgt. 14, T: +47 37 04 06 11. The oldest and biggest Ibsen museum in Norway with a separate exhibition of the poet Terje Vigen.
A/S Fuhr, Storgaten 60, Grimstad, T. +47 37 04 06 11, an exciting museum boasting Norway’s biggest wine cellar. Guided tours end up in the Vinestue where you can enjoy the magnificent view.
Lillesand:
Lillesand By- and Sjøfartsmuseum (town and maritime museum), Carl Knudsen Gården, T: +47 37 27 04 50. There’s a unique collection of tools, household utensils and furniture giving an intimate picture of our ancestors lifestyle in an old maritime town.
Høvåg:
Bronseplassen a reconstructed Bronze Age farm, T: +47 37 27 41 69. Take the boat, M/S Øya and get off at Høvåg (T: +47 94 58 33 97) and let the farm transport you 3 360 years back in time.
Høvåg Museum, T: +47 37 27 23 77, a well looked after farm and seaman’s home from the beginning of the 18th C. with amongst other things utensils, tools and farm equipment.
Kristiansand:
Kristiansand Dyrpark (Zoo) , www.dyreparken.no T: +47 38 04 97 00 – 250 acres of enjoyment. The Zoo features a wild animal reservation with wolves, wood grouse and lynx, Ape Jungle and recreation park, Kardemommeby (cardemom cake town) Cobblers Street, swimming pools, entertainments park. Evening pantomimes about Captain Swordtooth.
Entrance fee covers all attractions and activities in the park for one day.
Agder nature museum and botanical gardens A realistic exhibition illustrating south coast natural history from the Ice Age up until the present day in very special surroundings. Colourful minerals exhibition. The botanical gardens boasts Norway most extensive collection of cacti and exotic plants which makes a colourful contribution to the farmyard environment on the Gimle Estate.
Vest- Agder Fylkesmuseum, (county museum) is the biggest culture historic museum on the south coast, featuring an open air section, a town street from Kristiansand with a cafe in Consul Mørchs pavilion, a Setedals farmyard and a Vest-Agder farmyard. The main building houses theme exhibitions.
Baneheia, Ravnedalen Nature Park near the Kvadraturen in Kristiansand, is a popular recreation, running/jogging area

• Lillesand, departures daily, through Blindleia with white wooden south coast houses from the 20th C and huge, impressive residences built in the 1990s.
• Ny-Hellesund, departures daily to Vilheim Krags kingdom, with Olav’s bay where you can go ashore and inspect the coastal fort built by the Germans during World War II.
• Randesund, late afternoon trips, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday via Hamresanden and Dvergsnestangen
• Bragdøya, departures daily, visit the Kystkultursenteret and enjoy the rest of the day swimming and sunbathing.
• Dversøya, departures daily, exhibitions, bathing and other activities.
• Havnrundtur – round-trip of the harbour, every other hour, all day. See Kristiansand from a boat.
Søgne:
Kultursenteret Søgne Gamle Prestegård (old vicarage). art gallery, exhibitions and other arrangements several times a year. Note the bust of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson in the garden.
Søgne Old Church built 1640 is Norway’s oldest building with timber framework. Baroque and Renaissance paintings. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson married his Karoline in this church in 1858.
Uthavna Ny-Hellesund. an architectonic, south coast pearl. The poet Vilheim Krag lived here and the painter Amaldus Nielsen painted "Morgen ved Ny-Hellesund" (Morning at Ny-Hellesund). A pleasant stroll takes you to Loshytta and a panoramic view. Beautiful beach on Helgøya. Royal monogrammes in Olavsundet.
Boat trips S/S Lister in Høllen, reconstruction of a traditional 35 foot sailboat from 1870. You can sail around the archipelago to the outport of Ny-Hellesund on her.
Coastal steamer M/F Høllen, departures daily from Høllen to Ny-Hellesund.
The Madal Region:
Mandal Church. Norway’s biggest wooden church from 1821 – seats 1800.
Risøbank. Lord Edward T. Salvesen from Scotland (his parents were from Mandal) built his summer leisure home here in 1901. Art exhibitions and café during the summer season.
Mandal town museum. Art exhibitions of, amongst others, natives of Mandal Adolph Tidemannd, Olaf Isaachsen, Amaldus Nielsen and Gustav Vigeland. A maritime section of the museum is dedicated the tall-ship era.
Sjølingstad Uldvarefabrik,T: +47 38 25 60 23, the old wool factory from 1894 is a national monument over the textile industry in Norway. Dye-works, spinning mill, weaving mill and finishing works. Own power station. The factory became the centre of a thriving township.
Lindesnes lighthouse. Norway’s oldest lighthouse from 1655. The southernmost point of the Norwegian mainland, 2518 km from the North Cape. Excellent fishing, old fort, restaurant, art gallery and info. centre.
Spangereid. Township with many burial mounds and relics from the Viking era featuring the stones where the arrows used in shooting competitions between Olav Trygvason and Einar Tambarskjelve landed.
Galleri Gustav Vigeland/Lindesnes outdoor museum, Vigeland sentrum. Gustav Vigeland exhibition.
Lyngdal:
Klokkergården Bygdetun, with Norway’s smallest post office "Vegga poståpneri" and a school museum featuring a local rural environment. Info.centre and missionary museum.
Farsund:
Havika – a bird sanctuary in a public outdoor recreation area. A beautiful coastal landscape with characteristic sand dunes, Harvika is an important migration venue for birds.
Lista lighthouse in operation since 1836. Built in hand-hewn rock and lined with red bricks, the lighthouse stands 38m tall. The lighthouse is an art gallery, an ornitologic station and a information centre for nature- and culture reserves and cultural monuments all in one.
Loshavn – originally an outport in the days of sail, it played an important role during the privateering era 1807 – 1814. Later it developed into a prosperous town largely due to the the lucrative herring fishing era in the 1820s and 1830s.
Lista Museum an open air museum featuring Mathias Skeibroks collection, maritime, privateering, handcraft and agriculture sections. The Midthassel house is a sea captain’s home from 1742 with authentic furnishings.
Farsund Museum originally a sea captain’s house. Fantastic collection of relics from excavations of ship-wrecks near the outport Skarvøy. Furbished middle class home from the 19th C.
Penne. Penne site features 3000 year old rock carvings of ships, and footprints and other figures. Just below the site, to the west is the newly restored farm building from the turn of the 20th C

Kvinesdal:
Bøkkerbua (Feda) T: +47 38 35 16 11 is an old cooper’s shop by the river, where the ancient art of barrel making still lives. Sale of barrels and other souvenirs.
Feda – gamlebyen. the old town is the most well preserved urban environment in Vest-Agder, maritime, trade, post and legislative centre in the 17th C.
Marcelius Førlands Museum, artists house and atelier near Utsikten on the E-39. Permanent exhibitions of Førlands paintings.
Flekkefjord:
Fedrenes Minne, Hidra. Hidra. Museum with a fantastic collection of artefacts from the island’s maritime history.
