Attractions and other activities
This is what you can experience along National cycle route no. 3:
All numbers here are coordinated with the map you will find in the pdf-document with map.
The section Kristiansand - Vennesla
1) STATSARKIVET During the Second World War this was the
Gestapoos centre for the Kristiansand area, but it is now a
foundation working for peace and against oppression, racism and
violence.
2) DUEKNIBEN Detour up to the citys best viewpoint, almost
100 metres above sea level.
3) RAVNEDALEN Beautiful natural park. Established in the
1860s.
4) KROSSEN Cycle Route no. 1 and 3 take different directions.
Cycle Route No. 1 follows the old highway to the West of Norway,
while Cycle Route no. 2 continues along Setesdalsveien.
5) MOSBY Inland port in the 19th century we you can see the
remains of steamship jetties and quays.
6) MANOR HOUSE from 1846.
You will find arts & crafts artists and a restaurant here.
The sectoin Vennesla - R¿yknes
1) VENNESLA CHURCH Dates from 1830 and is
situated north of the centre.
2) BOMMEN FLØTNINGSMUSEUM (Log driving
museum) The house dates from the 17th century. From here
the logs that were driven down the river were
gathered and sorted. Exciting nature and cultural path.
3) STEINFOSS POWER STATION Built in 1960.
4) SETESDALSBANEN railway was in operation from
1896-1962, but is now a museum railway.
5) LOG FLUME Approx. 5 km - the longest in the country.
6) KRINGSJÅ The oldest power station in Kristiansand.
In operation from 1900 to the end of the 1950s. At that
time there were approx. 65 inhabitants.
7) SKISLAND Ski tracks and walking paths.
8) RØYKNES Special village, which owes its existence to the
Setesdalsbanen railway and Nomeland power station.
9) NOMELAND POWER STATION Has generated
power since 1920. Today, old and new technology stand side
by side in the old station hall.
The section Røyknes - Kiledalen
1) IVELAND POWER STATION Built in 1949.
2) LOG DRIVING WALL Worth a visit, but take care.
3) HOMEVASSEVJA The railway lineman used to live here,
but it is now an artists house.
4) GÅSEFLÅDEMNINGEN (DAM) With a log flume from
1949.
5) RUINS Of summer barn and mill. Old road.
6) ØVRE GÅSEFLÅ Exciting cultural monuments. Camping
facilities with bivouacs, barbecue area and toilet.
7) SAUGA (Suget) Before the dam was built, the water was
sucked out of the fjord with enormous force. A large stone
jetty controlled the logs here.
8) K I L E Use to be an important crossroads.
9) ARTIFICIAL STREAM Source of energy to the water
sawmill.
Kiledalen - Hornnes
1) KILEDALEN VENTEBUA (waiting room), which stood in
Kiledalen and has been renovated and returned to its
original site.
2) STONE ARCH BRIDGE From approx. 1840, protected.
3) FJELLMANNSVEGEN 1000-year old foot and bridle path
that the mountain people from Setesdalen used when
travelling to the coast with their wares.
4) SKRUBBEHOLA Old animal grave.
5) GO-KART TRACK Great fun for adults and children.
6) SETESDAL MINERALPARK Large park with
sculptures, buildings and different types of rocks. 1100 m2
exhibition hall inside the mountain with minerals and rocks.
7) HORNNES CHURCH Octangular church from 1828 with
an old christening font and pulpit. The oldest church on this
site was mentioned in the popeÕs accounts in Rome as early
as 1327. Here it was called Ornes i Odradalen provincis.
This was probably a stave church.
The section Hornnes – Evje – Byglandsfjord - Bø
1) FENNEFOSS MUSEUM Local museum and mineral
collection with library and history of local mine.
2) VERKSMOEN Remains of the largest burial site in
Setesdalen dating from circa 200 - 800 AD. Huge slagheap
from the melting furnaces of Evje Nickle Works, which was closed
in 1946.
3) EVJEMOEN Recently closed military camp
4) EVJE CHURCH Cross church, sanctified in 1891.
The first church on this site is mentioned in the papal
accounts as early as 1327.
5) SETESDAL SETTEFISK AS Has worked on saving
”blega”, a species of salmonid peculiar to Byglandsfjorden.
There is an exhibition room open to the public.
6) SYRTVEITFOSSEN Setesdal Rafting Centre. Cycle hire
7) DAMMEN Retaining dam for Byglandsfjorden.
8) ÅRDALSKNAPEN 752 metres above sea level
- signposted track from Neset Camping. Approx. 2 hours to
reach the top.
The section Bø – Frøyrak - Nånes
1) TJOVEHEDDEREN You will find Tjovehedderen (a small
detour) on the east side of Byglandsfjorden. Thieves and
robbers used to hide in this cavern, which has a 15 m wide
and 12 m high opening. Signposted path.
Nånes – Storstraumen - Åraksbø
1) VIEW FROM NÅNES over the fjord towards Lauvdal.
Lauvdal is situated in a sheltered spot and it is claimed that
spring in Setesdal comes here first.
2) RYSEFOSSEN waterfall Closed copper mine at the top
3) BYGLAND View towards the municipal centre of Bygland, on
the east side of the fjord
4) STORSTRAUMEN Channelled in 1869 and now has a
newly restored lock.
5) SANDNES CHAPEL The main church at Sandnes had
stood for several hundred years up to 1935. It was then
decided that it should be moved to raksb¿ where the majority
of the population in the parish lived. However, the people of
Sandnes were used to hearing the church bells ring for church
services and funerals. They took the matter in their own hands
and built a chapel that was sanctified in 1949.
The section Åraksbø - Sordal
1) SANDNES CHURCH
2) STORSTOGA Old 17th century writing office.
3) OSE ULLVARE Traditional and modern knitwear.
4)REIÅRSFOSSEN 300 m high waterfall.
5) AUSTAD CHURCH Mentioned in the papal books all the
way back in 1327.
6) PLACE OF EXECUTION The last execution in Setesdal
took place at Sordal when the unfortunate sole was
beheaded.
7) S A C R I F I C I A L S I T E In older times there was a
sacrificial site at the old pines in Sordal.
Section Sordal - Rysstad
1) HYLESTAD CHURCH
2) S Y V L I B U I silversmith shop
3) RYSSTAD WALKING PARK Signposted walking path
4) SETESDAL MUSEUM Costume exhibition and
exhibition about the development of hydroelectric power
in Setesdal.
The section Rysstad - Valle
1) NOMELAND At the junction by the school the road goes to
Lysefjord (75 km) and Stavanger (160 km). Cycle route no. 2
from Telemark Canal-Setesdal-Lysebotn-Stavanger. For active
cyclists we recommend a detour to Brokke Ð 10% gradient.
From here there is magnificent view over Rysstad.
2) SYLVARTUN CULTURAL CENTRE There is a shop
here that sells hand-made silver jewellery. There are also
exhibitions - among other things, Sylvartun has an impressive
collection of Norwegian ”harding” fiddles from legendary
Norwegian fiddlers. Sales exhibition of Olav Bjørgum.
Large picnic area down towards the River Otra.
3) MARHYL Approx. 800 m north of Sylvartun you come to
Marhyl. Public bathing area with smooth rocks, sandy beaches
and toilet facilities.
4) HALLANDSFOSSEN waterfall You get a good view of the
waterfall from Halland bridge. There are large potholes southeast
of the bridge.
5) TVEITETUNET At Halland Bridge the local road goes
eastwards to Tveitetunet. The Valle Exhibition is arranged here
in the summer. This is a sales exhibition with local art and
crafts. View over Valle from Brottveit.
6) MILL The cycle route swings into the old road passed the
mills beside the River Gryte and continues passed the school
area towards the centre.
The section Valle - Optestøyl
1) EINANG Characteristic mountain, close to the highway.
In Valle everything north of Einang is called ”oveinang”.
2) RYGNESTADTUNET Is a branch of the Setesdal
Museum. It is an original group of buildings from the 16th century.
Parish hero ”spiteful Åsmund” Rygnestad lived here. We
recommend a detour to Rygnestadtunet, 2 km from Flateland.
3) SUSPENSION BRIDGE at Lunden. Suspension bridge
over the River Otra.
4) BATHING Along the entire section there are good bathing
opportunities.
5) MILL Take special notice of the mill dating from approx.
1630 just before Trydal.
Optestøyl - Hoslemo
1) BYKLE CHURCH The oldest church in Setesdal.
The alter dates from 1619. The church interior has
traditional Norwegian rose painting.
2) EXHIBITIONS AT L I S L E T O G A N D
LUSEKOFTESENTERET Collection of old buildings,
sale and exhibition of traditional Setesdal knitwear.
3) HULDERHEIMEN Collection of old buildings with
furniture and fittings.
4) BYKLE TOWN HALL Collection of paintings by Reidar
Fritzvold with motives from Bykle.
5) ÅLMANNVEGEN Old road through Bykle dating from the
Middle Ages. Cleared between Lislestog and Byklestøylane.
The section Hoslemo - Hovden
1) VATNESDALSDAMMEN One of the largest filling dams
in northern Europe.
2) GOLF COURSE Challenging 9-hole mountain course.
3) HOVDEN SKYTESENTER Sale of rifles and a shooting
range. Courses available.
4) HEGNI RECREATION AREA Boat and canoe hire.
Signposted walks. Bathing areas and playgrounds.
5) HOVDEN JERNVINNEMUSEUM You can see here
how the Vikings extracted iron from the marsh ore.
The section Hovden - Sæsvatn
1) CHAIRLIFT Goes to the top of Nos, almost 1200 m above sea
level. Magnificent view and a fine starting point for a mountain
walk.
2) HOVDEN BADELAND Tropical water temperatures, slides,
Jacuzzi, pool and sauna. Just the thing for stiff and tender
thighs and leg muscles!
3) LISLEVATN NATURE RESERVE nature conservation area and
vidmyr nature reserve. Important wetland areas with typical
bird and animal life. Total of approx. 70 km2. Close to Highway
9 north of Hovden.
