Flåm lies innermost in the Aurlandsfjord, a side arm of the Sognefjord, one of the world’s longest (204 km) and deepest (1308 m) fjords. With a permanent population of only 300, Flåm is a traffic hub, where the fantastic Flåm Railway connects with most trains on the Bergen Railway (Oslo-Bergen) at Myrdal station. Regular bus and boat services provide good connections to Voss and Bergen. The new E16 road, the only all-year ferry-free road between Oslo and Bergen, has made Flåm easy and quick to get to by road. The Rallar Museum/Documentation Centre Bergensbanen at Finse gives an overview of the most important cultural monuments along the Old Navvy Road. It also features an exhibition called "The Battle Against Snow" with historical devices and machines for snow clearance.
